CALANGUTE: Lifeguards’ proved their mettle during the New Year weekend at Baga and Candolim which saw hundreds of thousands of tourists making a beeline to the Calangute-Candolim coastline.
Baga and Candolim reported the majority of incidents due to the large density of tourists on these popular beaches, Drishti Marine said.
Two minors, aged 10 and 12, were rescued after they were knocked over by a strong wave which swept them towards deeper waters off Baga beach. A lifesaver rushed to their aid with a rescue tube and successfully brought the children back to shore to their parents relief.
Also at Baga Beach, two tourists from Rajasthan, aged 45 and 53, were swimming when they were suddenly overwhelmed by powerful waves. When they were unable to swim back to shore, the two found themselves in a desperate situation. Lifesavers intervened and secured the individuals back to shore on a jet-ski.
On Candolim Beach, first-aid was administered to a 40-year-old man from Maharashtra who slipped while deboarding a boat and fractured his leg. Lifesavers rendered first-aid before transporting him to the Candolim primary health centre for further treatment.
Last week Drishti Marine had implemented midnight shifts for lifeguards as a strategic measure to safeguard lives at beaches and other water bodies, keeping in mind the increased tourist arrivals during the festive season.
