MAPUSA: Opposition councillor under the banner of Mhapsekarancho Ekvott demanded full time Chief Officer for Mapusa Municipal Council on Sunday.
“The administration at Mapusa municipality has collapsed due to negligence and if the council cannot run the administration, the government should hand it over to us. We are capable of running the administration," said Adv Sashank Narvekar, opposition councillor.
Narvekar and Komal D’Souza said that absence of full time Chief Officer is leading to increase in number of pending files.
While giving an example Narvekar said that an NOC for water connection of a shop, which was applied in April, is pending till date despite paying of all taxes for past 20 years.
Council Narvekar claimed that residents of Mapusa have to undergo harassment over issuance of permissions, NOC’s, licenses and other documents due to administration delay in clearing applications and files.
“Instead of making people to undergo harassment, municipality should build confidence in the minds of citizens so that they can come to the municipality without any difficulties and get their work done”, Narvekar said.
Narvekar also pointed that MMC website as well as telephone number is not working.

Take action against sopo
contractor: Mapusa councillor
MAPUSA: Alleging a massive scam in the sopo collection, Mapusa councillor Komal D’Souza demanded that the Chief Officer initiate action against the sopo contractor for failing to pay an amount in lakhs of rupees to the civic body as per the contract thereby causing a loss in revenue to the municipality.
Addressing media persons in presence of Adv Shashank Narvekar, D’Souza claimed that there are around 1400 vendors and daily an amount of Rs 50 to Rs 60 is collected as sopo from each vendor. However, till date the sopo contractor has not given bank guarantee to the municipality as per contract.
