MLA asks councillors to join hands against coal pollution

VASCO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has appealed to nine councillors from his Assembly segment to join hands with him to fight against the coal pollution issue faced by the port town.

Speaking to reporters, Amonkar said he had taken appointment with the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) Chairman on Friday, March 1, to discuss the coal pollution issue.

"Everyone is talking about coal pollution issue and many of them even are making allegations against me. They have the full right to do so because I am their representative. Some councillors  from my constituency also raised the issue in the Mormugao Municipal Council meeting and said that the MLA must take an initiative in this regards. I have now decided to take up the issue and also taken an appointment with the MPA Chairman to discuss on steps to control the coal pollution,'' he said.

Anonkar said he wanted to invite all the councillors from his constituency, specially from ward numbers I to IX, to join hands with him to fight the issue.

"We will set an example by attending the meeting with the MPA along with all the nine councilors. I have fixed an appointment with the MPA Chairman at 11 am on Friday and I will wait for all these nine councillors at my Sada office at 10.30 am so that we can go together to meet the MPA Chairman,'' Amonkar said.

Amonkar said, ''I am taking the initiative and I request all the councillors to join hands with me instead of making allegations so that we can unitedly take this issue up for the betterment of the people.''
