VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council on Friday started the work of demolishing the dilapidated and unsafe municipal buildings in its jurisdiction.
One of the municipal buildings, which was declared weak and unsafe was taken up first for demolition in the presence of Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar, Mormugao Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, councillors and municipal engineers.
Since the building was declared unsafe, it was posing danger to pedestrians walking on the footpath below it as in the past there were incidents of pieces of concrete falling on the footpath.
The building will be demolished manually as it is situated in between the two buildings and it was becoming difficult to shift heavy machinery.
Salkar said that there are many private buildings which are in dilapidated condition and that the occupants have been asked to hold discussions with the owners whether to raze such structures to ensure safety of occupants.
Salkar said that plans are afoot to develop municipal buildings under the public private partnership (PPP) mode. Rodrigues said that the building will be demolished at a cost of Rs four lakh within a month.
