VASCO: This Christmas may not be so merry and bright for Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) staff as sources revealed that they have not received their salaries and payment for the last three months.

Recently the workers met MMC chairperson Damodar Kaskar and submitted a memorandum and informed him about nonpayment of salaries. The MMC workers are struggling to make ends meet since they have not received their salaries ahead of Christmas festive season.

Chairperson Damodar Kaskar claimed that the salary will be released soon. Underlining the problem he said “MMC had received a grant of Rs 1.40cr in October, but since the Dena Bank, which is a banker to MMC merged with Indian Bank and IFSC code changed the cheque was returned. Our staff did not know about it.”

Asked if the employees will get payment on time in the December and the following months, Kaskar said, “We try our best to pay salaries on time. The salary bill is Rs 1.40 crore, but our income is half of that. So we try to make recoveries, but due to legal issues, we can’t recover much.”
