Calangute: Farhan Azmi, son of Mumbai’s Mankhurd MLA Abu Azmi, has been booked by the Calangute police for allegedly brandishing a pistol during a scuffle at a supermarket in Candolim late Monday night.

The incident occurred at Newton’s Supermarket around 11:12 pm when police received reports of a confrontation between two groups. Upon arrival, officers found both parties engaged in a heated altercation.

Initially, they refused to accompany the police to the station, but additional personnel were deployed to de-escalate the situation, following which both groups were brought in.

According to police sources, the individuals involved were given an opportunity to file formal complaints but declined to do so. As per protocol, they were sent for a medical examination at Mapusa District Hospital, which they also refused.

Investigations revealed that Abu Farhan Azmi possessed a valid arms license issued by the concerned authority, along with a permit allowing him to carry the firearm in Goa. However, since the altercation took place in a public space, disturbing public order, the police proceeded with a state-initiated complaint. A case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

The accused individuals, identified as Zeon Fernandes, Joseph Fernandes, Abu Farhan Azmi, Sham, and others, have been served notices under Section 35 of BNS, officials confirmed.

MLA Abu Azmi Booked in Mumbai for Alleged Derogatory Remarks

In a separate development, Mumbai police have registered an offence against MLA Abu Azmi for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Azmi, who serves as the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President, allegedly made controversial statements about Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, sparking widespread outrage.

The remarks led to protests by Shiv Sena supporters, prompting Mumbai police to book Azmi under Sections 299, 302, and 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Further investigations into both cases are ongoing.
