BICHOLIM: Residents on Sunday were shocked to find a mysterious white substance floating on the water at the famous Harvalem waterfall site.
According to the information, the Harvalem locals during their visit to the site noticed that the water had turned white and found a mysterious white substance floating.
They immediately informed the local MLA and Speaker, Dr Pramod Sawant, who in turn contacted the Goa State Pollution Control Board. The GSPCB immediately sent its team and collected the water samples.
“After I was informed about the incident, I visited the site and found a foam like substance in the water. We immediately contacted the GSPCB and are awaiting reports,” Dr Sawant informed.
According to information, people and the MLA suspect that it could be the industrial waste from Pissurlem Industrial Estate.
“We strongly suspect it could the waste from some chemical company at Pissurlem or upper Harvalem. We demand that the GSPCB takes strict action against such company,” Dr Sawant demanded.
“If this continues, there could be serious threat not only to the waterfall but also to the fields and marine life as well. The entire Harvalem area could get polluted,” Dr Sawant warned adding that “I am in contact with the MS to GSPCB, Sharmila Monteiro and will demand stern action against the company.”
It is pertinent to note that the Harvalem waterfall is one of the famous waterfalls in North Goa and is visited by several domestic as well as foreign tourists.
