MARGAO: Come October 2 and the village panchayat of Curtorim will embark upon an ambitious pilot project to rid the market area of the plastic waste as part of the plan to make Curtorim plastic free.
Deputy Sarpanch J Santan Rodrigues said the drive will be initiated in collaboration with the Curtorim Union, to ensure that the village is rid of the plastic waste, responsible for causing damage to the flora and fauna. As per the program chalked out by the village panchayat, the pilot project will be restricted only to Ward No one of the village comprising of the market area, Povacao, Pequeno, Rumbordem and Grande Rumbordem.
“Depending upon the success and the experience gained from one ward, the scheme will be extended to other wards from time to time”, Rodrigues said.
Replying to a question, he said that the collection centre will be normally located in the open spaces, road junctions etc taking into account the convenience of the residents.
“This would ensure that the residents collect their waste and put the same in the collection on the stipulated days of the week. The waste will be later collected by workers engaged by the panchayat for disposal”, he added.
To another question, he said the project will be restricted to plastics only and will be extended to other forms of waste.
While requesting the people of Ward No One to collect the plastic waste and dispose the same in the collection boxes, Rodrigues has sought the support of NGOs, sports clubs, social activists and the villagers in general to cooperate with the panchayat body to take the exercise to its logical conclusion.
