MARGAO:  Players may make merry and cash in on the attractive returns on matka betting, but there’s disquiet in the underground matka world over the unfair competition slowly gaining ground in the commercial capital.
The reason is not far too seek: A couple of matka agents operating from the city here have started offering prize money of Rs 1,000 for a bet of Rs 10.
This has raised a storm across the matka world as the attractive prize money threatens to wipe out those in the gambling activity for years now and who normally offer prize money of Rs 950 on a bet of Rs 10.
Sources in the know said that the new prize money has attracted matka players from far and wide towards the three kiosks.
The situation, sources say, has affected the matka bookies operating close to emerging matka leaders and threatens to hit the writers employed with the small-time bookies.
It is learnt that a similar situation had surfaced in the city in the past and the Margao police had then stepped in to curb unfair competition amongst the matka bookies.
Sources said the situation has been brought to the notice of the Margao police to ensure that the unfair competition does not result in violence and law and order problem.
Herald understands that one of the matka agents have now started paying Rs 1,000 prize money on every bet of Rs 10 in some parts of Salcete’s coastal belt
