The Goa Assembly on Wednesday condoled death of doyen of Hindustani vocal music Gangubai Hangal by maintaining silence for a minute in the House.
Hangal died at the age of 97 at a Bangalore hospital on Tuesday after a brief illness. The Chief Minister Digambar Kamat moved the condolence motion.
Speaking on the motion, Fatorda MLA Damu Naik said country has lost another great star of Kirana gharana. By her music talent she not only made Karnataka proud but the entire country. He requested the government to send a request to Union Government to posthumously award her with Bharat Ratna.
Speaking on the motion Speaker Pratapsing Rane said, star of Kirana gharana has left her footprints in the field of Classical music.
Queen of Hindustani music had performed in Goa during one of the classical music concert which are annually held in the State.
She was also felicitated by Kala Academy last year.
