MARGAO: Expressing concern over the subordination of values and ethics for the greed for money, Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo on Sunday said it is the responsibility of voluntary organizations, educated and enlightened citizens to protect and promote ethical order in society.
He was speaking at the centenary celebrations of city-based socio-cultural organization Gomant Vidya Niketan here on Sunday.
Sharing his concern over the disturbing trends in respect of social and ethical issues, the governor said “The last two decades has offered tremendous opportunities for the people to improve their social and economic conditions. Today, people seem to prefer economic wealth over critical values, both moral and ethics. They attack primacy to wealth and sidelined the moral and ethical aspects of life”.
He said the quest of creating wealth in itself is not bad, but what is of concern is the means adopted to achieve the objectives, adding that he firmly believes that the society that upholds and adheres to moral and ethics can survive and progress.
Complimenting Gomant Vidya Niketan for its pioneering work in the field of social awakening and social transformation in Goa, the governor said the organization has prepared Goans mentally, emotionally, intellectually to bring about social, cultural and political change in the society.
“Voluntary organizations have a crucial role to play in the program for development. I am happy to come across many such voluntary organizations in Goa,” he said, while expressing concern over social maladies, including poverty, ill health, illiteracy and atrocities against women and girl child.
In his address, ex-Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat recalled the role played by Gomant Vidya Niketan in shaping the social and cultural history of the state.
