Nephew brutally kills aunt over property dispute in Salcete

Police say the accused also assaulted victim’s neighbour and fled from the scene; arrested from a lonely place in the village

MARGAO: A 53-year-old Fulratina Fernandes from Padribhat, Sao Jose de Areal, was brutally killed late last night allegedly by her nephew Mario Oliveira, 46, over a property dispute making it the first murder to be reported in Salcete taluka this year.

Maina-Curtorim Police said the alleged accused fled from the scene after stabbing her with a knife. But a police team led by PI Arun Gawas Dessai succeeded in arresting him from a lonely place in the village Monday morning.

Mario also allegedly assaulted his aunt’s neighbour Juben Milroy Oliveira, 20, who had rushed to her rescue, before fleeing from the scene. Juben is admitted to South District Hospital, Margao and his statement will be recorded, said the police.

The complaint was lodged by the deceased woman’s son, 32-year-old Foster Oliveira, a seafarer. PI Arun Gawas Dessai said an offence under Section 302 of IPC has been registered against the accused for committing the murder of Fulratina and under Section 324 of IPC for assaulting Juben.

Though police have arrested Mario, the knife used to commit the offence is yet to be recovered. Police disclosed that the accused confessed to the crime during preliminary investigation.
