VASCO: Arguments broke out on Sunday afternoon over alleged “mass conversion by offering money” of non-Goan community by a religious sect, which the latter strenuously denied.

As per the information, members of a non-Goan community reportedly had a verbal spat with the members of the religious sect at the Tilak Maidan Complex in Kharewado, where the alleged “mass conversion by offering money” was reportedly taking place.

However, the Vasco police who got the wind of it, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under their control by dispersing the crowd

According to some reports, many members of non-Goan community had gathered at the Tilak Maidan stadium for a meeting of the religious sect. On learning this, some other members of the same community reportedly went to the place and were angered to find that many members of their community were attending the prayer meeting of the religious sect.

This reportedly resulted in a heated verbal exchange between the non-Goan community people and the members of the religious sect.

The “angry” members of the non-Goan community dispersed from the spot on the instruction of the police. However, before leaving they reportedly threatened to take legal action against the religious sect for “luring poor people from their community and encouraging them to embrace other religions.”

Speaking to media, a leader of the non-Goan community said that they would write to the Deputy Collector on the alleged mass conversions taking place at Tilak Maidan complex hall and request him to prevent the same.

A youth leader of the non-Goan community denied having an argument with the members of the religious sect. “We only wanted a list of our people so that we can disown them from our community completely,” he said.

Later speaking to media, member of the religious sect stated, “It is wrong to force anyone to accept any religion by offering money and other things. And we never forced anyone nor do we offer money to attend prayers here.”

“The people are here and anyone can cross check if any of them is offered money or we take money from them,” he explained.

“One community has asked their people to change their surnames if they want to embrace another religion, which is against the Constitution,” he said.
