PONDA: The residents of Ponda on Thursday demanded eviction of slum dwellers, who are mostly migrants settled illegally at Shapur-Bandora and in this regard a memorandum was submitted to Bandora Village Panchayat.

Speaking at a press conference, the locals said that the slum dwellings have been illegally set-up near the historic Safa Masjid and demanded that the government should take immediate action in this regard.

Premanand Gawde, Vishwesh Naik, Shailesh Naik and others were present at the press conference.

They alleged that the settlements of Shapur-Bandora in Ponda and Dattagad in Bethora, have increased and all the facilities are being provided to the slum dwellers because they are backed by politicians.

They alleged that as the slum dwellers in various places get shelter from the politicians, people with criminal antecedents take refuge in such slums. Crimes are committed by people from outside Goa in the State.

The locals said that there is a need to remove such settlements now.
