PANJIM:  The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) at its recent meeting approved several projects proposed by the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP).

The projects in waste management approved include multi-deck vibratory screening machine, compactors, tipper trucks, brush chipper/mulcher, composter machines and establishment of two 5TPD bio-digester units for processing of wet waste.

The multi-deck vibratory screening machine costing Rs 1.20 crore will help CCP handle mixed waste often generated at the construction sites, desilting works, blackspots etc. The machine will segregate mixed waste and channalise waste fraction retrieved from screening.

Once the machine is put into operation it will also reduce manpower requirement as manual segregation involves a lot of manpower and is time-consuming. Currently waste material is also found lying on the streets and in open areas in the city in the existing system of management of waste.

The meeting also approved the establishment of two 5TDP bio-digester units for processing wet waste as the Corporation could process and treat only 50 per cent of the daily organic waste collected from the city. These bio-digester units will be set up at the existing wet waste processing facility located behind Heera petrol pump and once commissioned it would make the capital city compliant to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

CCP is also hoping that with the establishment of these bio-digester units, it will be able to process and treat waste within its jurisdiction in a decentralised manner and achieve the State government’s required goals of making Panjim a model city.

The other proposals approved during the meeting were setting up of two mechanically-operated composter machines to convert leaf waste to compost within seven to 10 days since currently the time taken for compositing of leaves is more than two months. The daily quantum of leaf waste generated in the city is over 5 TDP.

CCP has decided to purchase two vehicles mounted with skylifts for pruning trees in the city. The corporation is of the opinion that these vehicle-mounted skylifts will be able to manoeuvre along the city roads and in small lanes. Currently the skylift is towed with a tractor, which often finds difficulty in manoeuvring on the city roads and in small lanes. The estimated cost of both vehicles is Rs 58.60 lakh.

CCP will also procure a new tipper truck for transportation of leaf waste, mulch, construction debris, mud, compost etc; two multi-utility vehicles; three compactors and a brush chipper/mulcher for solid waste management works.
