MARGAO: Superintendent of Police (Training) Sucheta Dessai and three others sustained minor injuries when a nitrogen-filled balloon caught fire during the annual sports day of a school at the Rumdamol Panchayat Ground.
SP Dessai, who was presiding over the event, was taken to a private hospital and discharged after first aid. Other individuals, including one with hand injuries, were also treated.
The incident occurred during the inauguration ceremony, as a mashal (torch with an open flame) was lit before balloons were to be released to mark the event's opening. The fire broke out unexpectedly, causing panic among attendees.
Fire personnel quickly brought the situation under control. Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh Bishnoi was scheduled to attend but was unable to due to other commitments.
Locals expressed relief that injuries were minimal despite the alarming incident.
