May 24, is etched in every Salesians' memory as being the feast of Mary Help of Christians, the patroness of Don Bosco. This year, despite this joy, there was a pall of gloom over the Salesian provinces of Mumbai and Goa. Fr Bernard Fernandes, principal of Don Bosco High School, Matunga died at Trinity Hospital, Campal, Goa.

Salesian Provincial of Goa Fr Felix Fernandes, who was his batch mate, was called to his bedside just before Fr Bernard passed away. Fr Bernard was on a holiday at his family home in Caranzalem and was hale and hearty when he landed in Goa, only to be taken ill two days later. Fr Bernard was only 56 years old when he died, much like his mentor Fr Benedict Furtado who died at 55.

There was widespread disbelief and shock at his passing, especially since he had touched many lives in the many institutions he had served. His unassuming, amiable nature, his gentle mannerism, his love for teaching, music and sports generally drew a large circle of admirers around him.

As Principal of Don Bosco High School Matunga from 2015, he was responsible for putting Don Bosco Matunga among the top 10 schools of India. A dedicated and accomplished educator, he leaves behind a legacy of love for confreres, students and parents.

Fr Savio Silveira, Provincial of Mumbai said, "Fr Bernard was a deeply committed Salesian and a highly esteemed educator. He was known for his meticulous follow up of both, the academics and administration of the schools he led, as principal. As a true Salesian, he always built a very close and caring rapport with youngsters."

Fr Felix Fernandes, Provincial of Goa said “I was privileged to know Fr. Bernard Fernandes from the time we were students together at Don Bosco, Panjim. He came across to me as a great human being, Salesian and priest. He was always duty-conscious and did whatever it took to offer the best services to the young people particularly in the field of Education.”

Fr. Clive Teles, Vice Provincial of Goa Province said, "Fr Bernard was indeed a father, a brother and a friend that spelled out Salesian joy, optimism and presence. We have indeed lost a loving Salesian who was passionate about educating the young." Farewell Fr Bernard!
