Tragedy in Neura: Mother, son die as wall collapses

Deceased have been identified as Maria Rodrigues and her son Alfred Rodrigues; the incident took place at around 3.45 pm

PANJIM: In a tragic incident, a 70-year-old woman and her 51-year-old son died after the wall of their house gave way at Neura, due to the incessant downpour that has been battering the State for the last two days.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Maria Rodrigues and her son Alfred Rodrigues. Fire and Emergency Service personnel reached the spot and recovered the bodies from the debris.

Speaking to O Heraldo, a police officer attached to Agasaim Police Station said the incident took place at around 3.45 pm. “The house where the deceased were staying was in a dilapidate state. The occupants were in the house when the incident occurred,” the officer said. Alfred’s wife had passed away some time back and his brother and children were not at home when the incident occurred. “Both were buried under the rubbled and were retrieved by locals,” said the official.

A case of unnatural death has been registered under Section 194 of BNSS (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita), the officer added.

Pandurang Kankonkar, Sub Officer, Old Goa Fire Station, told O Heraldo that they  received a call stating that a house had collapsed and two persons were trapped inside. “We were engaged in another emergency call at Dulapi-Corlim and we immeditalty rushed to the spot on receiving the information that two persons were trapped due to a house collapse at Mandur. By the time we reached, Alfred Rodrigues was shifted in an ambulance to Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim.  We then shifted Maria Rodrigues also to GMC,” Kankonkar said.

Sunny Gaude, Sunil Jalmi, Ramesh Virdikar Bhiva Gawas, Rajesh Chari, Anil Kholkar, Pritam Kalangutkar and Uddesh Gawas were part of the crew which were involved in the rescue operation.
