VASCO: A treated effluent pipeline from the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Katem-Baina to the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) was launched by the Sewerage and Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) on Wednesday.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar said that this initiative was a significant step towards improving waste water management in the Mormugao taluka.
“This is a win win project for the traditional fishermen of Baina and also to the MPA as it was one of most awaited project because the traditional fishermen of Baina had been complaining that the treated water was being discharged in the sea causing them a lot of inconvenience,” said Amonkar.
Following a joint inspection of the Baina STP, the then PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral had directed not to discharge treated water into the sea.
This project aligns with the State government’s initiative of promoting sustainable development and efficient resource management. The project is estimated at Rs 2.6 crore and is expected to be completed by a period of three months.
Amonkar said that once commissioned, the treated water will not be discharged in the sea and will be supplied to the MPA, who could utilise it for various purpose including construction or gardening etc. It will also enhance environmental sustainability and support the port’s operations with a reliable water source for non-potable uses.
