Two workers suffocate to death in Verna

VASCO: In a fatal workplace accident at the Cipla unit in Verna, two individuals, Akshay Bhimrao Pawar, 24, from Sangli and Akshay Vitthal Patil, 27, from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, died of suffocation while on duty.

Sources at Verna Police Station said they were informed by the casualty department at South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) in Margao that two men had been brought in dead following an accident at the pharmaceutical company located in the industrial estate.

During the inquiry, it was revealed that both deceased were employed as operators for N J Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd at the ‘briquette boiler’ plant at Cipla. On Thursday, around 4 am, the two entered the elevator pit to repair the crusher (machine). They reportedly suffocated and collapsed during the repair. Both were subsequently transported to the hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. 

An inquest panchanama was conducted, and the bodies were preserved at the hospital morgue for medico-legal formalities. The two technicians were residents of the Verna Masjid-Consua locality.

Verna Police Station has registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of BNSS. LPSI Pramila Fernandes is leading the investigation.
