PANJIM: With the water level rising in Tillari dam, the Maharashtra dam officials on Friday started releasing water.

As a result, there is likely flooding in the villages downstream at Dodamarg, Pernem and Bicholim.  Some parts of Mopa village were cut off after a bridge submerged under water.

“Due to heavy rainfall of about seven inches in the upper catchment of Tillari, water level in the river have increased, but is below the warning sign,” the Water Resources Department (WRD) chief engineer said.

Tillari dam is not full and no water is released from the dam, the WRD official said adding that the department is in touch with Tillari dam officials of Maharashtra and monitoring the situation. If heavy inflow from catchment continues, Tillari dam overflow may start by Saturday afternoon.

As regards to Madei, Khandepar, Bicholim,  Valavanti and Chapora rivers, the water  level is below the warning sign. So there is no need to panic, the WRD official said. As general precaution, the public are advised not to venture into any river streams, as there is considerable high flow.
