PANJIM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday slammed the opposition parties for politicising the River Mhadei issue.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJP spokespersons Giriraj Pai Vernekar and Adv Yatish Naik said that the opposition did not attend the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and claimed that the Chief Minister is doing everything in a legal way to fight for Mhadei river.
Vernekar said that the opposition should not politicise the issue and instead try to give solution to the issue. He said that Sawant is involved in save Mhadei agitation since 1998 and the opposition is trying show of strength by organising meeting in Sankhali constituency.
Adv Naik said that the State government has urged the Centre to constitute Mhadei Water Management Authority. This Authority will consist of six members including one reach of the three riparian States; he said adding that the State’s member will be able to take a holistic view of the State. The government has taken all legal measures and has left no stone unturned to save Mhadei.
He said that all political parties should come together to save River Mhadei and called upon opposition parties not to politicise the issue and to take Goa’s interest ahead. The State government is committed to the cause, he added.
