MARGAO: In a bid to promote region-centric research within the geographical area of Goa and specifically in the realm of Konkani language, culture, literature and history, the 'VM Salgaocar Konkani Samshodhan Kendra' (Konkani Research Centre) has been established in Margao. This ambitious project has been initiated by the V.M. Salgaocar group, under the directorship of Adv Uday Bhembre.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Coordinator Bhaskar Nayak and in charge Sanjay Talwadker, Bhembre announced the availability of research fellowship grants through the centre.
The primary emphasis of these fellowships lies in exploring Goa’s geopolitical history, socio-economy, anthropology, ethnography, and related themes, Bhembre elaborated.
He further explained that the research centre will encourage multidisciplinary research in areas identified by a committee of experts on an annual basis or as proposed by researchers based on the centre’s thematic priorities. Initially, the centre plans to support projects with a duration of up to one year, with financial support not exceeding Rs one lakh per project.
The core objective of this initiative is to facilitate research on Goan identity, culture, and social dynamics in various contexts and timeframes, with a special focus on topics that are inherently ‘Goan’ in nature, Bhembre emphasised.
Bhaskar Nayak added that, to kindle the interest of the younger generation in research, the Konkani Research Centre will organise workshops for teachers, enabling them to guide their students effectively.
As for the eligibility criteria, Nayak outlined that applicants must be regular or retired teachers of Goa University or colleges affiliated with Goa University, research scholars with a proven track record and a PhD degree, or individuals with at least 10 years of professional expertise. The maximum age limit for applicants is set at 65 years, with a preference for young researchers. Additionally, applicants must be domiciled in Goa and possess knowledge of Konkani.
