Police remand for breach of trust
MARGAO: The two accused Shameer Kottichira Ismael and Shabad Nalupuapattil Mohammed, both natives of Kasargod, Kerala, who were arrested by Margao police for breach of trust have been remanded to seven days police custody.
It may be recalled that on July 2, Puskal Fernandes of Borda, Margao, had lodged a complaint stating that one Mohammad Rafik from Bangalore took from him a dark blue colour Toyota Innova car on rent. The accused is said to have taken the vehicle to Kerala without complainant’s knowledge.
A police team from Goa arrested the duo from Kerala and attached the Innova vehicle worth Rs 12 lakh which has been brought along with accused to Margao.
The accused confessed they had given a fake passport as identity proof at the time of taking the vehicle from Fernandes.
Margao police is investigating whether the accused are involved in similar incidents in the State. PSI Ajit Umarye is investigating.
Poisoning: Anticipatory bail for one
MARGAO: South Goa District and Sessions Judge Nutan Sardesai has granted conditional anticipatory bail to Rajendra Chari from Sancorda, Dharbhandora, against whom Collem police have registered offence under 307 of IPC for allegedly threatening and forcing his wife to consume poison.
The court directed the police to release Chari if arrested on a personnel bail bond of Rs 10,000 and like amount in surety.
Satish R Prabhu, mamlatdar of Dharbandora, had filed a complaint with Collem police stating that Chari on May 30, 2013, at 12 noon with an intention to kill his wife Rajashree (35) had threatened and forced her to consume poison.
The police have recorded statement of their daughter Sonali and sons Suraj and Sidharth.
Complain against defacement
MARGAO: Margao mamlatdar Triveni Velip on Monday filed a complaint with Maina-Curtorim police under the Goa Prevention of Defacement of Property Act.
Sources in the Maina-Curtorim police informed that the offence was registered against the managing director of Jyoti Cement Company for pasting advertisement posters of the company in a private place at Raia.
Accident victim succumbs to injuries
MARGAO: A pedestrian from Balli, Krishna Naik, who was knocked down by a car on July 6 succumbed to his injuries at Hospicio, Margao.
The Ritz car driven by Vinayak V Naik of Agalle-Fatorda was proceeding from Canacona to Margao when it hit Krishna at Balli.
The pedestrian suffered grievous injuries and was shifted to Hospicio in a serious condition. An offence of rash and negligent driving has been registered by Cuncolim police under section 279, 304 of IPC against the driver of the car.
Inquest ordered into Cotigao suicide
CANACONA: The bodies of a 23-year-old woman and her two-month-old infant were on Monday handed over to her family for final rites even as an inquest has been launched by the Canacona deputy collector into the deaths.
According to Canacona PI, Harischandra Madkaikar, an inquest will be conducted by the deputy collector, Canacona, as required under the rules, since the death of Teja alias Megan Velip, a native of Gulem-Canacona and married at Cotigao, took place within seven years of marriage.
Accordingly, a post-mortem was conducted by doctors at Hospicio in Margao in the presence of Canacona Deputy Collector Prashant Shirodkar, informed sources.
An inquiry is likely to throw light on the circumstances that led Teja to take the drastic step and to ascertain if there was any foul play.
It may be recalled that Teja spent about two months at her mother’s house in Gulem and returned to Ponsuleammoll-Cotigao in the company of her husband barely a few days before she decided to end her life and that of her baby by jumping into a well along with her infant. The incident has shocked the locality in Gulem.
One killed, another injured in collision
PORVORIM: A 28-year-old truck driver from Candolim died while another driver was injured when two trucks collided with each other along the NH17 near Preeti International Hotel at Gawaswada – Mapusa on Monday morning.
The mishap paralysed traffic along the highway for about 45 minutes.
According to Mapusa Police, the truck (MH-07-K-0963) was proceeding from Pernem towards Panjim when the truck driver, Nissar Sheik, lost control of the vehicle while overtaking and collided with an oncoming truck (GA-03-K-9705) proceeding to Colvale.
Police said Ashok Chavan, the driver of the truck proceeding to Colvale, died on the spot, while Sheik sustained injuries and has been admitted at GMC Hospital in Bambolim for medical treatment.
Mapusa Police and officials of Mapusa fire station rushed to the site and removed both drivers from the mangled cabins.
Mapusa Police registered an offence against Nissar Sheikh for driving in a rash manner and is investigating the case.

Photo-journalists elect president
PANJIM: Kailas Laximan Naik, a photojournalist working at Dainik Herald was unanimously elected President of Photo Journalists Association, Goa (PJAG) for 2013-2014 during the annual General Body Meeting (AGM) held at Goa Union Of Journalists (GUJ) office at Shrama Shakti Bhavan, Patto Panjim recently.
Other elected members are Dinesh Sakhalkar (Vice President), Atish Naik (General Secretary), Sandeep G Desai (Treasurer), Nandesh Kambli (Executive Committee), Sameer Narvekar (Executive Committee), Rajtilak Naik and Soiru Komarpant as advisory members.
St Mary’s celebrates environment day
PANJIM: Environment Day was celebrated by the students of St Mary’s High School, Ponda, recently, under the guidance of their teachers Ruby Rodrigues and Nellie D’Costa.
‘Be one with Nature’ was the programme theme. A skit ‘The Story of Planet Earth’ was staged by students.
Clinton Vaz, a Goan environmentalist spoke on ‘Effective Waste Management’. He stressed the need to segregate dry and wet waste at home. Wet waste could be converted into compost and dry waste could be recycled.
Damodar Polji, a snake handler from the Forest Department, informed students about the different species of snakes found in Goa and the important role they play in maintaining an ecological balance.
Gold, silver stolen from Dhuler house
PORVORIM: Gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs 2 lakh were stolen from a residence at Ruzaiwada-Dhuler, Mapusa, on Sunday evening.
According to Mapusa Police, Bokshu Khan Pathan complained that two persons entered his house by breaking and opening the locks and latches of the entrance door and decamped with a container which was kept in the cupboard and which contained gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs 2 lakh. Mapusa Police is investigating the case.
Parked car looted in Sinquerim
CALANGUTE: Cash, mobile phones and other items worth about Rs 74,000, belonging to a native of Hyderabad, were stolen from a car that was parked at Sinquerim on Sunday evening.
According to Calangute Police, Harshit Singh complained that some person stole his wallet containing credit card, debit cards, cash of Rs 6,000 and two mobile phones, all worth about Rs 74,000 from his parked car. Head Constable Arun Mandrekar is investigating the case.
Kiosk owner assaulted at St Inez
PANJIM: The Panjim town police have booked a man for assaulting and demanding extortion money from kiosk owner Ramashankar Bindosari Chawhan at St Inez last weekend. According to the complainant, Santesh Kankonkar demanded money from him while he was serving snacks to his customers. When he refused, the accused beat him up.
Police have registered an offence against Kankonkar under sections 384, 427, 323 IPC.
In another case, one Santosh Subhedar of Porvorim complained that two unknown car occupants wrongfully restrained and assaulted him on the nose and mouth, near Urban Health Centre Panjim on the afternoon of July 7.
Police have registered a case against the unknown men and launched a search.
Books distributed to needy students
BICHOLIM: Bicholim Youth Social and Cultural Association (BYSCA) recently distributed books to needy students at Bicholim as part of its annual books distribution programme. About 56 needy students, right from Std 1 to graduation, were given books by the members of the BYSCA.
“Education is a must in this competitive world and this organization takes utmost care to see that these children also avail the benefit of education,” said BYSCA President Fairoz Baig and added, “Whenever possible, our organization will help the needy students .” BYSCA Secretary Ashraf Shaikh and Niyazil Shaikh also spoke on the occasion.
Malisa bags National Youth Award
PANJIM: President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the National Youth Award-2011-12 on Malisa Zemira Simoes at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on July 4. The minister of youth affairs and sports, Jitendra Singh and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion. It is for the first time the National Youth awards have been
given by the President of India. Malisa is the only Goan to have received the award. These awards were conferred on 27 individuals and one organization.
