Iran has decided to lift visa requirements for citizens of 33 countries, a move aimed at promoting an open-door policy and showcasing the country's commitment to engaging with the global community, according to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA). The list of countries includes Gulf states like Saudi Arabia, marking a significant development in the recent thawing of relations between Iran and its Gulf neighbors, particularly Saudi Arabia. This decision will bring the total number of countries or territories whose citizens can visit Iran without a visa to 45.

The move reflects ongoing efforts to improve diplomatic relations in the region, with Iran and Saudi Arabia agreeing to restore full diplomatic ties in March 2023, mediated by China. The decision to waive visa requirements for citizens of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and other nations is a positive step toward fostering greater connectivity and understanding between these countries. Notably, the list includes countries from various regions, such as Lebanon, Tunisia, India, several Central Asian and African nations, and one Western-allied European nation, Croatia.

This initiative aligns with Iran's broader strategy to attract more tourists and promote cultural exchange. The visa exemption will facilitate travel for citizens of the specified countries, contributing to increased people-to-people interactions and potentially boosting tourism in Iran. The decision is also significant for Iranian pilgrims, who will now be able to travel to Saudi Arabia for the first time in eight years, starting from December 19.
