Afghanistan fast-bowler Naveen-ul-Haq has concluded his ODI cricket career following Afghanistan's exit from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Their last match in the tournament resulted in a 5-wicket loss to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Naveen, who debuted in 2016, collected 22 wickets in 15 ODI matches for Afghanistan and confirmed his retirement via Instagram after their loss to South Africa.
Expressing gratitude to his supporters and the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Naveen announced his decision to retire from ODIs after the World Cup, aiming to extend his playing career in T20 cricket. Despite an unsuccessful final ODI match against South Africa, in which he went wicketless and conceded 52 runs, Afghanistan's overall performance in the World Cup showcased significant victories over formidable opponents, securing four wins in the tournament. Their triumphs included successes against former world champions, positioning them at the sixth spot in the World Cup 2023 points table. This success also secured their participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Naveen has also been an active figure in T20 matches, representing Afghanistan in 27 games and claiming 34 wickets. Additionally, he is a familiar presence in several franchise leagues, participating in the IPL, LPL, BBL, and PSL.
