In the wake of escalating number of accidents, the State Transport Department is stepping up efforts to address the issue of transport vehicles, particularly rent-a-cabs, operating without speed governors. Officials have been instructed to conduct thorough inspections to ensure the presence and functionality of speed governors, with a specific focus on 'Rent-a-Cab' transport vehicles, in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act.
Assistant Directors of Transport (ADTs) are mandated to carry out comprehensive examinations during the renewal or issuance of fitness certificates for transport vehicles, verifying the installation and proper operation of speed governors. A deadline of March 11 has been set for ADTs to submit a detailed action taken report, which will be reviewed on March 12, 2024.
Rule 118 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 mandates the installation of a 'speed governor' in every transport vehicle. The speed governor should have maximum pre-set speeds for different categories, conforming to the Standard AIS 018/2001. The Transport Director has issued a stern warning, emphasizing that any non-compliance and shortcomings in inspections will be treated seriously.
