Mobile towers amidst public ire

Herald Team
At a time when Reliance Jio is scheduled to launch countrywide 4G cellular services across the country, the company is faced with stiff opposition to mobile towers across Goa especially in the villages. The high mast towers although claimed to be safe and sound by the company, still is silent on the health aspects and risks to the residents due to radiation and means to measure the radiation levels in the vicinity of the towers. No liability clauses for the tower companies are incorporated in the licensing procedures so that the people could claim damages due to exposure to radiation. Mobile towers seem to have cropped up at every corner in the cities overnight even near schools and hospitals defying guidelines and past High Court judgments not to allow towers near schools and hospitals considering the risks of continuous radiation to the children and patients. The general public especially in the villages have been highly critical and have vowed to oppose any attempts to install mobile towers near their houses and residential areas. Our pristine villages are set to be invaded by mobile towers amidst public ire in the name of high speed connectivity. Demand for space and permissions issues for mobile towers especially in cities and villages has started to corrupt the minds of our councillors, panchs and other officials of agencies involved in the licensing procedure so much that they suddenly seem to have realized that the villages require secure mobile and net connectivity for our children’s future. The effect of a strong signal coupled with high speed net connectivity is bound to boomerang on society values where already Facebook, WhatsApp and other Internet apps have corrupted the minds of people and today’s growing children and teenagers. Parent’s already struggling to police their children over net usage will be at the receiving end as even the remotest corner of the house will be no longer a dead spot. Reliance Jio and other tower companies seem today desperate and just willing to convince everyone that mobile towers are safe with their well prepared and tower oriented presentations. However they fail to realize the villagers have a right to decide whether they will allow a mobile tower in their backyard or not. Studies have revealed the link between mobile tower radiation and brain cancer and the people staying within 300 mtrs to be worst affected. “The 4.5 lakh mobile towers in India are turning India into an open microwave” warns Girish Kumar, researcher and faculty at IIT Bombay while speaking at the national seminar on ‘mobile phone and tower radiations’ at GCCI hall Panjim, by Govt. Polytechnic, Bicholim.. He says, “Those living in a 50-300 m radius face a high risk – much worse than smoking as you cannot smell or see radiation”. “Biological effects include drying of fluids around the eyes, brain joints, heart and abdomen leading to sleep disruption, headaches, memory loss due to changes in the electrical activity of the brain. Prolonged exposure to mobile radiation increases chances of cancer by 200- 400 % over 8-10 years,” Kumar stressed. It can also lead to miscarriages as it affects the amniotic fluids. While mobile companies have vowed to mesmerize the Indian society with high speed net connectivity and mobile reach, the people and all other living beings in the country are bound to suffer the ordeal of continuous radiation in their vicinity. We have to realize that our love for our mobile should not make us compromise on the health aspect of our children and the generations to come in the name of better connectivity. Time is not far when electromagnetic rays continuously bombard us like being in a  microwave if the tower companies are given a free hand in installing towers without going through a proper site selection.
