Herald Team

Pednekars are still eagerly waiting for the 100-bedded Tuem hospital built a few years ago to become fully operational.

The hospital was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 52 crore. The project completion date was due in March 2017. However till date, except for the Dialysis Unit, no other facility is operational in this building.

The 100-bedded hospital at Tuem is part of the renovated Community Health Centre and construction of this hospital is part of the second stage of the project, making the CHC a fully furnished sub district hospital.

In September 2021, the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the dialysis facility on the ground floor of the building. However expect for this, the whole building is lying vacant and unutilised.

The project work was undertaken by undertaken by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) on a total area admeasuring 11,546.82 square metres and even after its completion, the building is yet to be fully functional.

Sources said that once the project is made fully operational, it will be later attached to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) as a rural medical centre where several doctors from GMC will undergo internship. The doctors will also be provided with residential quarters and the existing renovated building of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) will be used for administrative purposes in the future.

This hospital, which is supposed to serve the entire Pernem Taluka as well neighbouring villages of Maharashtra, had it been fully operational within the stipulated period, then it would have helped people to avail required facilities within the taluka, instead of travelling all the way to North District Hospital at Mapusa or Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim since the existing Community Health Centre does not have all the required facilities.
