MAPUSA/RAIA: Clube de Salgaocar made a promising debut in Goan football with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sesa FA in the 2nd edition match of Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Saturday.
Despite the experience of Pratesh Shirodkar in midfield, Clube de Salgaocar, featuring a squad largely composed of youngsters, started sluggishly. Sesa FA, on the other hand, showcased better ball control and possession but failed to capitalise on their opportunities in the first half.
The match saw limited chances, with Sesa FA having the best opportunities. Chaitan Dabholkar’s cross from the right was missed by Omkar and Beckham Singh at the far post. Beckham later made a promising run down the left, setting up Sankhalp Kankonkar just outside the box, but Kankonkar’s shot was off target. Additionally, Clive Miranda’s header from a set piece failed to trouble the Clube de Salgaocar defence.
Clube de Salgaocar’s striker Roger Pereira struggled to make an impact, prompting coach Keenan Almeida to substitute him with Isac Zomuanpuia. The change brought greater balance to the team, and it paid off in the 57th minute.
Mevzen Olivera’s through ball reached Isac Zomuanpuia, who calmly finished to secure a 1-0 win for Clube de Salgaocar.
