MAPUSA: Rev Fr Mariano Fernandes, in charge of Duler Seminary, and Datta Prasad Kakatkar - Batji, blessed the refurbished Astro Tuff football ground of Duler, in the midst of GFA's President Caitan Fernandes, GFA's senior Vice-President Anthony Pango, Vice-President Jonathan D'Souza and executive comitteee members from the North and South and club team officials.
Caitan, speaking to reporters, expressed his joy, calling it a significant day for him and his team. He mentioned that during his campaign, he had promised clubs that the Astro Tuff ground would be refurbished, and they managed to fulfill that promise without relying on government funds. The renovation, which cost Rs 1.86 crore, was funded by the GFA after a long delay.
He also mentioned that the Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, had pledged Rs 6 crore to the GFA, but they are yet to receive it. Once they receive the promised funds, they plan to distribute it among around 200 clubs.
Jonathan expressed his delight, saying that the dream of the GFA and the clubs had finally come true with the refurbishment of the Astro Tuff ground. The last time the ground was upgraded was way back in 2011 by FIFA.
He added that starting from March 22, the newly refurbished Astro Tuff ground would host fixtures of the IWL 2 Group C matches, followed by matches from the Goa Professional League and other GFA league matches.
