PANJIM: Goa’s Dayne Edgar walked away with a silver medal for India in the windsurfing men's category of Sim 37 Singapore open championship which was held recently.
The championship was opened to all and allowed the Asian sailors to compete in innovative race formats.
In a series of 12 races and two discards, the strong winds gusting from 8-18 knots favoured Dayne and led him to the topmost position ever achieved in the history of Indian windsurfing.
Illaham Wahab, sea games silver medalist and world no. 5 sealed the crown.
“Dayne put in his best performance, but due to lack of international coaching, he was left disappointed.   Gede Subaiasa from Indonesia took the bronze,” Dayne’s father and coach Donald Coelho said.
“He has proved that India has medal winning potential at the Asian games 2018 scheduled for October,” he added.
“The Men's Windsurfing RS  is the confirmed class at the Asian Games 2018. In the International arenas, the federation laid down planned development programs prior to Asian games /Olympics. Dayne’s programme still stands nil,”informed Donald.
“Professional and scientific coaching under a foreign coach is needed to be adopted at the earliest,” urged Donald.
Dayne is looking forward to fly the Indian tricolour at the Asian games podium.
"We are proud that we have proved within our own capabilities," said Herbert Rodrigues, secretary of Goa beach sports academy under the burgees of GYA.
