MARGAO: Holy Trinity registered a solitary goal victory over St Sebastian in the final of the Benaulim Youth Inter-Sector Trophy organized by Prime Sports Club, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, recently.
St Sebastian played with lot of grit and determination but ultimately the favorites lived up the billing when striker Cannute Fernandes slammed in the all-important winner in the closing stages of the match.
Holy Trinity picked up the pace early on with playmaker Vijaj Morajkar finding gaps in the rival defense for strikers Cannute Fernandes and Calver Fernandes who however were wasteful. St Sebastian goal keeper Swisfran Silva also made a handful of crucial saves.
For St Sebastian, medio Greto Rebello and skipper Joseph Fernandes worked hard to stop the flow of the rival attacks.
When it appeared the match was drifting towards the tie-breaker, Holy Trinity winger Merwyn Afonso's stiff grounder was parried away by rival goalkeeper Swisfran Silva and fell to Cannute, who bulged in the nylons.
Earlier, SSC top rankers from Benaulim were awarded the Fr John Correia-Afonso educational awards.
Fr. Lucio Dias, parish priest of St John the Baptist church and Episcopal Vicar for South Goa was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Fr. Rocklin D'Costa, parish priest of Holy Trinity church; Fr Benjamin Sacrafamilia, chaplain of Patrocinio Chapel; MLA of Benaulim Constituency Caetano Silva; Dr Wiseman Pinto and Lalita Correia e Afonso.
Boaventura Leitao, secretary of Prime Sports Club proposed the vote of thanks. Anthony Rodrigues compered.
Holy Trinity were awarded Rs 7,000 and trophy while St Sebastian had to content with Rs 5,000 and a trophy.
Individual prizes were awarded to the following. Best Player of the tournament: Vijay Morajkar (Holy Trinity). Best midfielder of the final: Greto Rebello (St Sebastian). Best defender of the final: Stancer Furtado (Holy Trinity) and Man-of-the-final: Cannute Fernandes (Holy Trinity).
