IND vs ENG: Yograj Singh Says Gill Missing Triple Century Was a ‘Criminal Offence’

Former cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, voiced his disappointment after Shubman Gill narrowly missed becoming the first Indian in over a decade to score a triple century in Test cricket. Gill played a breathtaking knock of 269 in the first innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston but fell just 31 runs short of the landmark.

Reacting to the dismissal, Yograj remarked, “A player’s hunger should never die. Saying ‘I’ve scored 200’ or ‘250’ — fine, but that’s your job, brother. Why did you get out?” While critical of the missed milestone, he also acknowledged Gill’s hard work and evolution over the past seven years.

Gill didn’t stop there. In the second innings, he hammered a fiery 161 off just 162 balls, steering India to a declaration at 427/6 in 83 overs. His knock featured 13 boundaries and eight sixes — marking his eighth Test century and third as India’s Test captain. With a staggering match aggregate of 430 runs, Gill now holds the second-highest run tally in a single Test, trailing only England’s Graham Gooch (456). He also became the first-ever player to score both a double century and a 150+ score in the same Test match.

Virat Kohli praised Gill on Instagram, hailing him as a “star boy” and lauding his historic feat.

Gill’s purple patch began with a classy 147 in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, though India lost that match by five wickets. Since then, he’s established himself as a pillar of India’s Test side — combining consistency, elegance, and leadership.

Fans and cricketing legends alike are now looking ahead, eager to see how far this young captain can take Indian cricket.
