Punjab Kings have announced a replacement for Glenn Maxwell for the remaining matches of IPL 2025. The Australian star was ruled out due to a finger injury. In his place, the franchise has brought in another Australian cricketer, 23-year-old Mitchell Owen, who will join the team for INR 3 crore.
Maxwell's injury came to light just before Punjab Kings' match against Chennai Super Kings. Team captain Shreyas Iyer had revealed that the Australian all-rounder was ruled out due to the injury. Maxwell was bought by Punjab Kings for INR 4.20 crore in the auction, but he managed to score only 48 runs across six innings.
This Australian star from Tasmania has played 34 T20 matches so far, scoring 646 runs. He has scored two centuries in this format, with a highest score of 108 runs. He is also a bowler and has taken 10 wickets in T20 cricket. He is a right-handed batter and a fast bowler.
Mitchell Owen is currently playing in the Pakistan Super League, where he is part of Peshawar Zalmi under the captaincy of Babar Azam. He grabbed attention in the Big Bash League 2024–25 season while playing for Hobart Hurricanes, scoring 452 runs in 11 innings and even hitting a century in the final. Initially a middle-order batter, Owen was promoted to opener just before the BBL began.
Following his BBL success, he registered for the IPL auction but went unsold. However, his performance earned him contracts in both the South Africa T20 League and the Pakistan Super League. In South Africa, he represented Paarl Royals, where he played three matches, scored 14 runs, and took two wickets. In the PSL, he has played seven matches so far, scoring 101 runs and taking two wickets.
