CALANGUTE: A brilliant brace by Mario helped United Club Nerul clinch the Airtel Beach Football Challenge 2013-14 trophy at Calangute beach, on Monday.
Nerul, the most impressive team among 32 in the fray, defeated Candolim Sports Club 4-2 in the final.
Nerul earned their first goal thanks to an erroneous own goal by a player from Candolim Sports Club.
Powered by an early lead, Joelif scored the second goal for Nerul and the third and fourth goals in quick succession were brilliantly scored by Mario to take home the championship.
Although Candolim Sports Club’s star players Sarvesh and Daphen scored a goal each for their team, Nerul maintained their lead to take the game and trophy away from Candolim.
Nerul were richer by Rs 30,000 + trophy while runners up Candolim had to settle for Rs 20,000 + trophy.
The individual award include: Best goalkeeper: Krupesh Bandodkar, Candolim Sports Club (Rs 2,500). Top scorers: Ashley Lobo and Domnic Fernandes (Rs 2,500).
