
The 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards opened with a skit in which Jean Smart appeared as her ‘Hacks’ character Deborah Vance, an aging standup comedian, as she mistakenly believed Vance was booked to host the show. The event’s actual host, Kristen Bell, took the stage.
Timothée Chalamet won outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’. Timothée is vying to become the youngest Oscar winner ever for best actor. Conclave won the SAG award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. The best picture race has been especially hard to peg this year. Demi Moore continued her strong awards season run for ‘The Substance’ by taking home the SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a lead role. The victory was Moore’s third among the major Oscar precursor ceremonies. She previously won best actress prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.
Selena Gomez shared the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series with her ‘Only Murder in the Building’ co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, neither of whom was present. “We never win,” an amazed Selena said as she accepted the award. Shōgun was the top winner on the TV side, with four awards, including outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.
During her acceptance speech for the SAG lifetime achievement award, 87-year-old actress Jane Fonda mentioned she began her career in the late 1950s and added, “we are in our documentary moment” right now.
