It is time to break free from the stacks of books before the
exams and test your sporting skills. ‘Spree 2015’, an annual sports festival
organised by Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani - BITS Goa Campus
and powered by the Herald Group, will begin today and go on until March 15,
2015. The festival offers participants an opportunity to participate in at
least one of the events that they think they can excel at.
“So far we have received registrations from almost 60-70 colleges across the country but the exact number will be confirmed on the opening day of the festival. A Facebook page was created on Spree 2015 and a ticker was running on the national music channel 9XM,” says Ishita Mishra, a member of the organising committee at BITS Pilani Birla Goa Campus.
Spree offers challenging contests with main and special events. The main sports activities will include the likes of cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, carrom, table tennis and chess. Informal sports will include C pool, rapid chess, gully cricket, table tennis shuffle, mixed doubles badminton and futsal. Other interesting contests include hogathon and scavenger hunt.
To keep the participants on their feet till the end of the day, a host of cultural events is also being organised. ‘The Beat Machine’, ‘Agnee Concert’, ‘Suhani Shah Illusionist’ and ‘Ramya Iyer Coke Studio Concert’ are a few of them.
“Spree is known as one of the biggest sports festivals in India and many colleges look forward to it. The popularity of the festival has spread more with word of mouth as colleges who have been participating since 2007 make it a point to be a part of the event. With our huge campus and state-of-the-art sports facilities, we also have hostel rooms to accommodate the students who come from outside the state. There is a limited number of students we can accommodate and accordingly we accept registrations,” adds Ishita. The beauty of the festival is that a college can participate in a minimum of one game.
The theme of the festival this year is ‘Challenge Your Limits’ and the participants will surely do their best to lay their hands on the prestigious Spree awards.
