
30 May Collective is an initiative by Goan artistes, themed on ‘liberating sounds of
Goa’, held to mark the 31st Goa Statehood Day. It featured sound design aspects
of various folk forms. The program was held in collaboration with Department of
Art and Culture, Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir and Parikrama Knowledge Terminus at
Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir, Ponda.
Noted playback singer and Indian rock music artiste Suraj Jagan
inaugurated the show and sung a few lines of his signature number ‘Give Me Some
Sunshine’ from the film, ‘3 Idiots’, while Tushar Kamat, who has recorded and
designed the sound for May 30 Collective was quick to join Suraj with the lines
of ‘Taari Tariya Re’, a famous poem by Goan writer Pundalik Naik. The show was
dedicated to the memory of late Shridhar Kamat. A memento was presented to his
wife, Anju Kamat, at the hands of Suraj Jagan. 30 May Collective included
collective performances of Goan groups that participate in several youth
festivals and it featured performances by Tushar Kamat, Divya Naik and Suraj
Pinge.
The show opened up with Divya Naik singing her signature ‘Dhalo
ge’, playing various instruments and rhythm. She was joined by John and group
along with Sai Damodar group of Margao. Kalarang Keri performed Konkani Pop:
‘Gavuya Konkani’, written and composed by Hemant Aiyya. It was followed by an
unplugged performance on Dhalo by Yuva Jaitavant group of Bicholim. Traditional
trio of Tiatr was performed by Kathamgal Dada Sankrutik Pangad, Ponda. It was
written by Malcolm D’Costa.
Later, Tushar Kamat took the stage to explain his experiments
with Goa folk. Taking into consideration the colour and flavour of Goan folk,
Tushar decided to use World Music form to experiment. He was supported by Divya
Naik and Suraj Pinge along with Saraswati Kala Mandal, Kurti Ponda. Tushar
played his recently composed five tracks on various forms.

Gaude performed ‘Savang’ of traditional Jagor. The evening concluded with the
performance by Savoi-Verencho Sakhayahari playing different forms of Shigmo.
Guru Naik and Vandana Mulvi engaged the audience with their anchor pieces full
of wit and humour while Pruthavi Naik handled the narration.
