Comedy is undoubtedly one of the main elements in drama. Comedy gives one a sense of relief, eases one’s pain, and makes one feel good. Many people go through a lot of pain and have a lot of problems in their lives, but when they watch a funny performance, they forget their problems. Myron Correia experiences a great joy to be a comedian and acknowledges the fact that he has been the reason for laughter for the audience. Therefore, he feels great performing on stage, knowing that through his performance he can make others happy.
Myron started singing in his father, late Selvy Correia’s tiatrs in 2016, but professionally he started his acting in Tragedy King late Mario Menezes’ tiatr ‘100%’ in 2018, when he was 16 years old. The best memories for him were when people accepted his acting and singing skills and instantly gave him the title of ‘Jr Selvy’. Apart from that, the memories and friends that he made in that tiatr will always stay in his heart. Mario Menezes and Rosy Alvares guided him and helped him to give his best in every role. His solo, composed by Mario was a superhit and would be repeatedly invited back on public demand for every show. That was the beginning of Myron’s journey as a comedian.
For Myron, his father is his biggest inspiration and role model, but apart from him, there are other tiatrists who he looks up to like Antonette de Maina, Roma, Comedian Richard, Lawry just to name a few. They guide him and correct him. Myron strives to be not only a good actor like them but also a helpful person just like them. Talking about the title ‘Jr Selvy’ given to him by the people, he says, “I feel really good when people call me ‘Jr Selvy’, because I’ve always looked up to my dad when I thought of becoming a comedian. I am so grateful and honored to receive so much love, respect, and honor from my fans, just like how my dad received. ‘Sarko Selvy bashen zala’ is the greatest compliment that I have ever received, and I will continue to make my dada proud by following in his footsteps.”
Myron has many fond memories of his father, comedian Selvy. “When we two were acting in a scene, and every time I forgot a dialogue, Dada would make big eyes at me and would correct me backstage. One day, he happened to forget the dialogue and still continued to look at me with big eyes until he realized it was his mistake, so when we came backstage, I sarcastically asked him if I should shout at him now, and then we both started laughing,” reminisces Myron, who studied at St Xavier’s High School, Velim before pursuing CRM at Mount Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Chinchinim, and then completing a six month culinary course at Fr Agnel Culinary and Hospitality Academy, Margao.
Myron adds, “Losing my father has been painful for many tiatr lovers. But I don’t think I will ever be able to fill the gap that he has left. We can only follow a particular actor or actress, but we can never be that person or take their place. Once that person is gone, that person’s work and their memories will last forever, but nobody can take that person’s place, even if it is his own child. There will be many actors who will try to act like my dada, but there can never be another Comedian Selvy on the Konkani stage.”
As ‘Mhojo Daddy’ is Myron’s first tiatr, Myron felt very scared and nervous about the outcome, but he did not face much difficulties because of he had a supportive family and group. Each artist helped him in various ways. They were very cooperative and supportive and guided him. The love and support received from the audience was immense. It was Comedian Richard, who helped in many ways. He had great support from his family especially his mother and his brother, Ryan.
Myron always wished to script a tiatr. ‘Mhojo Daddy’ is dedicated to his father for all his hard work and dedication to tiatrs. He feels it would not have been possible without Joe Valent and his friend, Comedian Richard Colaco. “This tiatr is a great success because of the love and support that I received from my family and troupe. I am happy with the response received by my first tiatr.”
Myron and his troupe also have plans to perform in UK with his debut tiatr, ‘Mhozo Daddy’ in August and already booked shows there. Just back from UK where he was performing in Comedian Ambe’s tiatr ‘Duplicate’ for four shows, Myron is exhausted yet full of energy to perform the next shows in Goa. “I have performed for many tiatrs in the UK, including Coemdian Sally’s ‘Mutt Bhor Matti’ and Lawry Travasso’s tiatr ‘Sopnantlim Fulam’. In the month of August, we will be visiting UK again to performed two tiatrs, Comedian Richard’s tiatr, ‘Maimchem Korun Ghott’ton, Sasumaink Khavoita Motton’ and my tiatr, ‘Mhozo Daddy’ as both the tiatrs have the same cast and crew,” informs Myron.
Does Myron want to be like his father? “I do not have to imitate my father, but I want to be a successful comedian like him. Very often, I receive criticism on social media saying that I try to copy my dad and get fame, but that is not true. I have grown up watching my dad perform, but I have never set and studied his acting skills because I don’t have to do that. Being my father, his talents and skills run in my blood too. When I act and sing, it naturally comes to me. Therefore, I do not have to imitate my dada, as I am blessed with his art of making people laugh,” concludes Myron.
