Camões-CLP is hosting ‘Poetry in Colour’, bringing together
the work of artists and poets. Opened on March 21, it was a celebration of the
creative relationship between poetry and art on the day of the Spring Equinox
which was also celebrated worldwide as World Poetry Day and the International
Day of Colour.
The show also celebrated the centenary of one of the most
well-known and translated Portuguese poets, Eugénio de Andrade (1923-2005), aka
José Fontinhas Rato. Born in Póvoa da Atalaia, Fundão, Eugénio de Andrade lived
in Lisbon and Coimbra, before settling in Porto in 1950. Over his more than 50
years of an award-winning literary career, the Prémio Camões of 2001 stands out
as a poet of profound musicality.
Eugénio de Andrade was a contemporary of the Neo-realist and
Surrealist movements without, however, ever showing influences or clear
affiliation to those or other literary schools. He shared lifelong associations
and friendships with illustrious personalities like Miguel Torga, Eduardo
Lourenço, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Marguerite Yourcenar, among many
others.
Poetry in Colour commemorates Eugénio de Andrade by weaving
together poetry and art in the form of conversations, exhibition, video
installation and performance, with powerful imagery that captures the Goan
landscape and other themes in multilayered forms of expression.
Exhibiting artists include Cynthia Chowgule, Dhruv Goswami,
Liz Kemp, Miriam Koshy, Shilpa Nayudu and Venita Coelho and joining the works
of Eugénio de Andrade, poets whose words will echo through the rooms at the
Institute over these two weeks include Rochelle D’silva, Salil Chaturvedi,
Tanya Mendonsa, José Luís Peixoto and Rui Cóias.
On March 29 at 6 pm, there will be an interactive session on
‘Eugenio de Andrade and the Contemporary Portuguese Poetry’ with the Portuguese
poet Rui Coias in conversation with Delfim Correia da Silva (online and live on
YouTube) with Q&A in Portuguese and English.
On April 1, there will be a performance ‘Mai in tee -
Embodied Earthivism' at 6 pm by multidisciplinary artist Pushpanjali Sharma
with poetry reading by Salil Chaturvedi, in response to Miriam Koshy's work on
display 'Mhadeianjali' with musical accompaniment by
Jatin Vidyarthi.
On April 4 at 6 pm, there will be a dance recital, ‘Poetic
interpretations and celebration of movement by Impana Kulkarni and Priyal Prana
with musical accompaniment by Subhash Sajja.
The exhibition ‘Poetry in Colour’ will be on display at
Camões-Centro de Língua Portuguesa, Casa Basilio Dias, Panjim till April 4 from
