Under the banner ‘G F Productions, Navelim-Salcete’, tiatr ‘Dubav’ written and directed by Gloria Ferrao was staged on the second day of Kala Academy’s 10th Tiatr ‘B’ Group Competition at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

The story revolves around Remeth (Custodio Pacheco) and his only daughter Filomena (Gloria Ferrao). Both live in poverty, yet the father manages to get his only daughter married to a seafarer by taking a bank loan.

Filomena ties the knot with Menino (Roy Crasto) and she now lives with her mother-in-law Natalin (Jenevie Vaz) and Menino’s spinster sister, Ema (Lucinda Vaz) in a palatial house. Mother-in-law and sister-in-law hate Filomena as she comes from a poor family, but she reciprocates with love and concern.

After Menino gets back to duty on ship, there’s more harassment and counter-arguments between Filomena and the other two members of the family. After a long period, when Filomena decides to visit her poor father, doubts crowd the minds of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

One fine day, when Roy sends a parcel for his wife and family through his friend (Bernard Fernandes), there are more doubts empowering the minds of Natalin and Ema. What follows next is to be watched in the second half of the drama.

There are performances by Roy, Gloria, Jenevie and Lucinda in the lead roles. Francis Fernandes, Jose Mario Pereira, Melanie and Rachel are in the supporting acts. Among all, Jenevie was good in her acts as mother-in-law and a little extra support from other artistes would help her to stand out.

For some lighter moments, there’s Melvern Fernandes, Anthony Fernandes and Tina Travasso with pills of laughter with them.

In the category of songs, there’s a choral as the opening song by Nazareth Coutinho, Melissa Mascarenhas, Jose Mario Pereira and Serena Dias. There were solos from Serena Dias, Nathen Fernandes, Melvern Mascarenhas, Nazareth Coutinho, Gloria Ferrao and Jose Mario Pereira. There were songs in other categories as well, namely duo, duet, trio and quartet, but none were interactive in nature.

The band offstage has musical members Shelton Fernandes (trumpet), Ashtrof Fernandes (saxophone), Eslam (bass), Selwyn Mascarenhas (keyboard) and Sleton d’Costa (drums). The stage sets and light effects were handled single-handedly by Anthony Fernandes. The background music was provided by Joyd Antao.
