PONDA: Hailing from Kavlem, Ponda, Sahil Ravindra Naik has emerged as a prominent name in the field of contemporary art, earning acclaim on both national and international platforms. 33-year-old Sahil’s journey from the culturally rich backdrop of Goa to the global stage exemplifies a deep-rooted connection to his heritage combined with a forward-looking artistic vision.
Sahil’s childhood was steeped in the vibrant traditions and cultural festivities of Goa. From participating in the elaborate floats of Shigmotsav to intricately decorating homes during Ganesh Chaturthi, Sahil was immersed in communal celebrations that nurtured his creativity. These formative experiences instilled in him a profound appreciation for craftsmanship and storytelling. “Every creation held a story, a purpose—this is where I found my calling,” Sahil says.
He went on to pursue a formal education in the arts, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Goa College of Art and a Master’s in Fine Arts from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. This academic journey not only refined his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective. “My time in Baroda was transformative—it exposed me to diverse philosophies and collaborative practices that shaped my work,” Sahil explains.
Primarily identifying as a sculptor, Sahil’s work transcends traditional boundaries. His creations often incorporate miniature architectural models, blending themes of history, memory, and cultural narratives. “Sculpture is my primary focus, but I also experiment with painting, photography, and video,” he says, emphasising his interdisciplinary approach.
Sahil’s art is a conversation—a dialogue between the past and the present. Each piece invites viewers to explore layered narratives, weaving together elements of heritage, architecture, and memory. “I aim to create works that not only reflect my roots but also resonate with contemporary audiences,” he shares.
Sahil’s contributions to the arts have garnered significant recognition. Represented by Experimenter Gallery, a leading contemporary art space in India, his works have been featured at prestigious exhibitions, including the 5th Kochi-Muziris Biennale and the Art Encounters Biennale in Timisoara. His international presence extends to showcases at the Delfina Foundation in London and Foundation Elpis in Milan.
Named in Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 in 2018 and Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 in 2019, Sahil is celebrated as a visionary artist. Grants like the Warehouse 421 Artistic Research Grant have enabled him to pursue ambitious projects, pushing the boundaries of his practice.
One of Sahil’s notable recent accomplishments was completing the In-Ruins residency in Southern Italy. “This experience allowed me to explore the intersections of contemporary art, archaeology, and natural history. It deepened my understanding of how culture, environment, and history intertwine, and it has inspired new directions in my work,” says Sahil.
Looking ahead, Sahil aims to expand his creative practice by engaging in more residencies and exhibitions that explore the intersections of art, history, and environment. “I want my work to inspire dialogue and challenge perceptions, bridging gaps between tradition and modernity,” he says, adding that he’s keen on pushing artistic boundaries.
