DC Studios has unveiled the first full trailer for Superman, set to hit theatres on July 11. Directed by James Gunn, the film serves as a reboot of the iconic superhero and offers a glimpse into a bold, expansive vision for the DC Universe. It marks the beginning of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
The trailer features a tense conversation between Clark Kent/Superman and his fellow Daily Planet journalist—and love interest—Lois Lane. She questions his unauthorised intervention in a foreign conflict, challenging the morality of his actions. While Superman insists he was driven by a desire to save lives, Lane argues that he failed to consider the consequences.
Several major characters make their debut, including ARGUS director Rick Flag Sr., Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and the infamous Lex Luthor, who appears alongside The Engineer. With so many heroes and villains in play, one question looms large: What kind of threat is powerful enough to force Superman to assemble a team of superhumans?
Fan reactions have been mixed but passionate. One viewer commented, “This Superman, based on the trailer, looks like every Superman movie ever made rolled into one. I see elements from the Donner era to Man of Steel and Superman Returns.” Another added, “When the world gets darker, Superman stories matter more. This trailer reminds us why we still believe.”
However, opinions are divided over David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman. Some praise his performance as that of a “vulnerable god.” One fan noted, “Superman being upset that someone would question whether saving people was the right thing to do is the most Superman thing ever. James Gunn understood the assignment.”
Others remain skeptical. “There’s something about this new Superman that just doesn’t sit right with me,” one user wrote. “It’s way too colourful. It almost looks like a cartoon, to be honest. There’s no seriousness to it. Bring back DC’s classic darker tone.”
