Krewella, popularly known as the hottest women in electronic dance music were in Goa to perform at Sunburn 2014. After releasing their first album ‘Get Wet’ which was featured in the top 10 albums in the Billboard Chart, Krewella are making their way to the studio for their next album. The electro duo from Chicago made their debut in 2011, and has kept the dance energy going ever since. “We had never been To Goa. We have performed at Sunburn in Mumbai and Delhi for the same 2014 tour. This had about double or triple the amount of people, and the energy was insane. It was on a bigger scale as compared to the other cities of the festival. The stage production was gorgeous,” says Yasmin Yousaf, the younger sister as Jahan, the elder sister agrees.

The Yousaf sisters grew up in a Muslim household, with a Pakistani father and a mother of German, Polish and Lithuanian descent. According to the girls, their father would have not approved of what they are doing but is now the coolest dad in the entire word. Being sisters, they connect in their home, studio and on stage. “We have very similar tastes in music, so we hardly argue in a set about what to play or not to play. We have a great natural chemistry as we have lived together our whole lives, so we are almost the same person. When we are in the studio writing songs, it is like our brains fuse together,” says Jahan.

Asked as to how did the name Krewella come in mind, Yasmin says “I was writing the lyrics of a song back in 2007and the name just popped in my head. I didn’t want to second guess it. We sometimes over think for an half an hour and go back to the original. So we stuck to it.”

Krewella has released four singles so far, ‘Killin’ It’, ‘Alive’, ‘Enjoy the ride’ and ‘Live for the Night.’ Krewella’s style is inspired by EDM genres like house, dubstep and catchy lyrics. Right after their Calgary show on New Year’s Eve, they will be heading to the studio in Los Angeles. “Our process is a little different from the first album. On this album, we are paying attention to song writing and we are writing all the songs first. The songs are so important and we should be able to change the chords underneath it. Most of the time, when writing songs we imagine how it will be for a live setting and the audience would react,” says Jahan.

Speaking about performing across the world, the duo caters to different audiences. They have a process of selecting which songs will do well. “When we play for college shows, it is mostly rap. Thinking about this show, we knew that India is not a homogenous community but we think about the market and we always talk about what vibe we should go about for the show,” says Yasmin.
