The cycling community is abuzz with excitement as the epic adventure for the much-awaited ‘Atal Setu’ to ‘Ram Setu LRM 1200KM’ has begun! Organized by Audax India Randonneurs, led by Rajesh Malhotra and his team, this epic ride began on Friday, January 26, and will conclude on Monday, January 29. Covering a whopping distance of 1200 kilometres over 90 hours, it’s a test of both physical and mental strength.

This adventurous event marks a significant milestone in the realm of long-distance cycling, as participants gear up to embark on a challenging journey from Atal Setu, traversing through the scenic landscapes of Bangalore and Madurai, before ending their adventure at the sacred shores of Rameshwaram. The route map, meticulously planned to ensure both thrill and safety, promises an unforgettable experience for riders and spectators alike.

In a recent interview, Rajesh Malhotra, the organizer behind this remarkable initiative, shed light on the inception and evolution of the Atal Setu to Ram Setu LRM. He revealed, “We are proud pioneers of long-distance cycling in India, having introduced the concept of one-way rides to diverse destinations. Our past endeavours, such as the Goa to Kanyakumari and Goa to Pondicherry rides, have set the stage for this monumental event.”

The timing of the ride holds special significance, coinciding with Republic Day and spotlighting the historic connection between Ram and Ayodhya. Aptly named Atal Setu to Ram Setu, this ride symbolizes a journey of reverence and resilience, echoing the spirit of unity and faith.

With 22 participants, including enthusiasts from Goa, Tamil Nadu, Indore and beyond, the Atal Setu to Ram Setu LRM promises to be a test of endurance, courage, and camaraderie. Each rider brings a unique blend of skill and experiences to the table, united by a shared passion for exploration and adventure.

Among the participants, Sameer Naik emphasized the importance of hydration and mental fortitude, highlighting the role of positive visualization in overcoming challenges. Naik shared, “My training regimen involves riding 50km daily at a fairly high speed. To prepare for such big endurance rides it’s very important to keep ourselves hydrated. In view of this, I consume at least 2-3 litres of water every day. Endurance rides test one’s mental and physical capabilities, and each one has their own strengths and weaknesses. My main weakness is dealing with the mental aspect of the ride, and the way I deal with it is by fooling my mind. When the going gets tough, I imagine positive thoughts.”

Meanwhile, Santosh Sawal underscored the significance of regular breaks and strategic pacing, citing his recent achievement of completing a 600-kilometer BRM ride as a testament to his preparedness for the upcoming challenge. Sawal shared, “On a daily basis, I use to ride for around 50kms and more distance on Saturday/Sunday. Hydration is a very important aspect along with the right food intake. Before this big ride, I have trained myself up for the big ride by doing 200, 300, 400 & 600 kms. Endurance rides test you both physically and mentally as well. You need to have the right temperament to complete the rides.”

Adding to the anticipation, Shashikant Nahik provided valuable insights into the technical aspects of long-distance cycling, including navigation strategies and the utilization of specialized GPS tracking devices. Nahik explained, “We use specialized GPS tracking devices with inbuilt maps to navigate in the directions. There are hiccups sometimes and we end up on the wrong route; this actually takes additional time and energy to come back on the right route. These are testing times wherein you lose precious time, and then you need to regain the time lost by speeding up.”

As riders brace themselves for the exhilarating journey ahead, the organizers have left no stone unturned in ensuring a seamless and memorable experience for all involved. From meticulously planned control points to provisions for essential support and assistance, every aspect of the ride has been meticulously organised to facilitate a safe and fulfilling experience for participants.

With 22 enthusiastic participants geared up for the journey, the Atal Setu to Ram Setu LRM 1200KM promises to be an exhilarating test of endurance and determination. Each rider brings their unique training regimen and mental preparation to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Malhotra also provides a glimpse into the logistical aspects of the ride, including control points along the route and the riders’ self-sufficiency. With participants required to complete the full route within 90 hours, the journey demands meticulous planning and execution. Control points spaced every 100 kilometres provide essential rest and refuelling stops for riders, ensuring they maintain optimal performance throughout the ride.

The riders’ experiences and insights offer valuable perspectives on the challenges and strategies involved in long-distance cycling. From hydration practices to navigation techniques, each rider brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the event.
