Garbage dumping along roadsides has become a persistent problem in and around Mapusa, with numerous black spots accumulating mixed waste, plastic, diapers, and even rotting carcasses. Shockingly, even in the heart of the Mapusa market, a large garbage dump remains unattended, with no daily waste collection. Stray dogs tear through the piles, further spreading the mess and worsening the unhygienic conditions.
Many well-meaning citizens, community groups, and even foreign visitors have taken the initiative to organise cleanup drives along these garbage-filled highways. Yet, despite their efforts, the filth returns in no time. This raises serious questions—why do people resort to dumping waste on the roadside? Is there no proper garbage collection service in their residential areas, forcing them to transport their trash in cars and on bikes just to discard it in public spaces?
It is imperative that the authorities take decisive action to curb this menace. Installing CCTV cameras at known black spots to identify and penalise offenders could be a crucial step toward deterrence. Additionally, strengthening waste collection services, enforcing stricter regulations, and raising public awareness about responsible waste disposal are necessary to address this ongoing issue.
