The Mapusa yard, which houses the wholesale fruit and vegetable stalls has been in an unhygienic and disorderly condition. The open drains next to where the fruits have been stored have turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies.
Dead rats, vermin and mosquito larvae have turned the place into an eyesore and foul smell emanates in the area and it is a health hazard.
Rotten fruits and waste have been dumped all over the place and one wonders whether it is an agricultural yard or the dumping ground.
The fruit and vegetable vendors had obstructed public access by dumping wooden boxes in open passages while others have even trespassed on footpaths. One does not need magnifying glasses to see how fruits are brazenly ripened using artificial chemicals. Green papayas and bananas turn yellow over night and are carted off to the market with no health checks. Is the government so insensitive to public health that it does not care to visit the place and see what is happening around?
It is high time that the Food and Drugs Administration, Health Department and the municipality pays a surprise visit to the market and seals the place as business is being transacted in an unhygienic manner which is detrimental to public health.
