PANJIM: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a yellow alert for September 10 and 11, 2024, warning of heavy rainfall with winds gusting to 30-40 kmph at isolated places over North and South Goa districts.
“Heavy rainfall with winds gusting to 30-40 kmph is very likely at isolated places over North and South Goa districts on September 10 and 11, 2024,” the IMD said.
Meanwhile, Sanguem received highest rainfall of 1.4 inches followed by Valpoi which received 1.2 inches of rainfall and Sanquelim 1 inch during a period of 8.30 am of September 7 and 8.30 am on September 8, 2024.
The State has received 160.4 inches of average rainfall since June 1, 2024 till September 8, 2024, which is 45.6 per cent more than the normal rainfall. Normally, the State receives 110 inches of rainfall during the same period.
Meanwhile, fishermen said that they are unable to venture out in the sea due to inclement weather conditions prevailing in the state and the surrounding areas.
Francis D’Souza, a trawler owner, told O Heraldo that he is paying his staff for the last month in spite of them not venturing into the sea.
“I have got around 125 staff. I am paying them for the last one month though my four boats have not ventured into the sea because of the rains. This has happened for the first time in many years. Earlier we used to go in the sea but this year despite the fish ban lifted on August 1, we have been unable to venture out because of the bad weather condition. This has caused a loss to us as fish is not available in the market which has led to prices of fish shooting up,” he said.
