Musk looking for business benefits

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has emerged as a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election. This alignment has raised eyebrows, given Musk's previous political affiliations and his reputation as an innovator.

Historically, Musk has supported Democratic candidates, including former President Barack Obama. However, in recent years, he has expressed dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party, citing concerns over regulatory policies and taxation.

This discontent has led him to gravitate toward Republican ideals, culminating in his support for Trump. Musk has been vocal about the need for a more efficient government. Trump has proposed appointing Musk to lead a “Department of Government Efficiency” if re-elected, a role that aligns with Musk's vision of streamlining governmental operations.

According to some experts, Musk’s companies, particularly Tesla and SpaceX, have faced regulatory challenges under the current administration. By supporting Trump, Musk may be seeking a political environment more conducive to his business operations, with less stringent oversight and more favourable policies.

This level of financial support underscores Musk’s commitment to Trump’s re-election efforts. Both Musk and Trump have emphasised the importance of free speech. Musk's acquisition of X was partly driven by his desire to promote free speech, a principle that resonates with Trump’s political platform. This shared value has likely strengthened their alliance.

Musk has actively participated in Trump’s campaign events, including a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he emphasised the importance of the upcoming election. His presence at such events highlights his personal commitment to supporting Trump. He has been critical of the current administration's policies, particularly regarding energy and technology.

One may be prompted to think that by supporting Trump, Musk might be advocating for a change in leadership that aligns more closely with his views on innovation and economic growth.

But in reality, his support for Trump appears to be driven by a combination of political, business, and personal factors.

His shift from previous Democratic affiliations to endorsing Trump reflects a strategic alignment with policies and values that he believes will benefit his enterprises and the broader technological landscape.

Supporting Trump may provide Musk with opportunities to influence policies that affect his businesses, especially in areas like space exploration and renewable energy. A Trump administration could offer a more favourable environment for Musk’s ventures.

Musk believes Trump will win and believes that will result in more NASA contracts for SpaceX, more federal contracts for Starlink, more incentives for Tesla, protection of Section 230 for Twitter and other opportunities across his portfolio.

A Trump win could also see Musk directly influencing politics as in August, Trump said he “certainly would” name Musk to a cabinet or advisory role if elected, adding that Musk was “a brilliant guy”.

Crony capitalism has always been integral part of US governance system. But this blatant support from a corporate tycoon is unethical as there would be open favouritism towards Musk's commercial ventures, which will clearly pave way for monopoly in areas where Musk's business interests lie.
